For most women, breast health is a primary concern.  Statistics indicate that 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Fortunately, advancements in technology provide earlier detection. Breast Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) is an additional screening tool that was FDA approved in 2011.  It was deemed clinically superior to traditional mammography.  Utilization of breast tomosynthesis (in clinical data) indicates an increase in cancer detection.

Effective January 1, 2015, Medicare approved breast tomosynthesis as a covered preventative service. Yet many commercial payers are still denying coverage.

Dr. Jessica Guingrich, Medical Director of OSF Center for Breast Health, is working closely with the Peoria Medical Society and Illinois State Medical Society petitioning the Illinois Insurance Committee to support Senate Bill 54. Approval of this bill will make breast tomosynthesis available throughout Illinois so that women are not denied optimal care due to insurance coverage.
