Vascular access for dialysis treatment is common for patients suffering from kidney failure. CIRA’s fellowship-trained interventional radiologists are highly skilled at the placement of venous catheters in the internal jugular veins of the neck, which can remain in place from six to 12 months with very low infection rates. Additionally, CIRA interventional radiologists are frequently called upon to assist surgeons with the creation of arterial venous fistulas by precisely mapping the veins in the hand with contrast dye or through ultrasound, avoiding needle sticks. Our interventional experts also are called on to help lengthen the life of a fistula site through various salvage techniques. CIRA radiologists work directly with nephrologists and vascular surgeons to ensure the best possible care.
