Uterine Fibroids

CIRA’s skilled interventional radiologists offer a highly effective alternative to hysterectomy for women with uterine fibroids, benign tumors that develop in the uterus. The most common symptoms are heavy menstrual bleeding, bleeding between periods, pelvic cramping and pain, frequent urination and pain during intercourse. Uterine fibroid embolization involves passing a very small catheter into the uterine artery, and injecting tiny particles into the fibroids, alleviating them non-surgically. Safer than traditional open surgery, uterine fibroid embolization involves very little blood loss, and allows for a much more rapid return to normal activities and work (one week vs. 5-6 weeks for open hysterectomy).
